Folding lights
Barbara shows in a short video how to make folding lights with glass lanterns and baking paper.
That's what it takes:
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Cut the paper to size - version 1 (up to the edge of the glass): 16 x 27.5 cm (incl. adhesive edge) - version 2 (beyond the edge of the glass): 20, 24, 28 x 27.5 cm (incl. adhesive edge)
Step 2
Mark the edge with a pencil by 1 cm (gluing edge) and apply glue to the gluing edge.
Step 3
Glue together to form a paper tube and leave to dry for 15 to 30 minutes.
Step 4
Remove the metal bracket. Place the glass with the opening facing downwards on the base and place the paper tube over it.
Step 5
Push the tube downwards with both hands, turn the glass over and repeat the process.
Step 6
Variant 1: attach a ribbon and the metal bracket.
Tissue paper - Vichy check
Barbara shows how to decorate glass lanterns with the charming Vichy check pattern using colourful tissue paper.
That's what it takes:
Cutting technique 1 with cutter:
Lay tissue paper on top of each other (up to 8 layers), print out template pdf 'Stripes' on 80gr paper, lay over it, cut out strips using a ruler and cutter
Cutting technique 2 with scissors:
Mark 1 cm wide strips with a pencil and ruler and cut out
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1
Remove the metal bracket.
Step 2
Cut the white tissue paper to size. Mark with a pencil (7.5 x 25.5 cm) and cut out with scissors.
Step 3
Cut coloured tissue paper strips (two or one colour, either cutting technique 1 or 2)
- 5 horizontal stripes: 1 x 25.5 cm
- 14 vertical stripes: 1 x 8 cm
Step 4
Apply a strip of decoupage varnish in three places. Carefully wrap white tissue paper around the glass. Flush with the top edge. Prevent creases as far as possible.
Step 5
Apply decoupage varnish from the centre towards the edge. Carefully brush out any creases and air bubbles.
Step 6
Apply horizontal coloured strips. Apply decoupage varnish to the upper edge and place the paper strips on top. Continue with 1cm spacing. Brush over each strip with varnish.
Step 7
Apply vertical coloured stripes.
Step 8
Finally, brush over everything again and leave to dry.
Step 9
Preheat the oven (top and bottom heat) to 160 degrees. Harden in the oven for 30 minutes. The découpage varnish for glass and porcelain acts as an adhesive and sealant at the same time. After fixing in the oven, the glass can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Step 10
Attach any straps and metal brackets
Tip: To attach the tissue paper strips, you can moisten the tip of your index finger with a little spit to make it easier to pick up the paper strips from the table and then attach them to the glass.
Variant with rondelles, hearts, shapes
Print the rondelle or heart template onto 160-gram paper and cut it out. Place up to eight layers of tissue paper on top of each other, fix the template to them and cut out the contours.
For the hearts: Cut out the heart template, fold it in the middle and insert four folded rondelles to cut the contours.
Apply a thin layer of decoupage varnish to the glass, place the cut-out shapes as desired and coat them with varnish again. Leave to dry. Cure in a preheated oven at 160 degrees for 30 minutes.
